Pastor Tom continued the Stay in the Story series by focusing on the prophet Elijah, reminding us that he was not just a biblical character—he was a real man. Citing James 5:17, which tells us Elijah was “as human as we are,” Pastor Tom emphasized that God uses real people with flaws, fears, and failures.
Elijah enters the scene in 1 Kings 17 without much background. He had no royal training, no fine clothes, and no credentials—but he knew God. After 56 years of Israel following Baal, the false god of fertility and storms, Elijah boldly prophesied to King Ahab that there would be no rain for three years—not by Baal’s doing, but because the one true God said so. Elijah challenged the false god even before the famous fire-from-heaven showdown. He already knew Baal had no power.
Even in the middle of bold moments, Elijah needed rest. God gave him breaks because there was still work ahead. Elijah could face kings and call down fire because he spent time with God. It wasn’t about where he came from; it was about the calling on his life—and his prayers.
But Elijah also broke down. When Jezebel put a hit on him, he ran, hid, and fell into despair. God met him there, not with judgment but with help—sending Elisha and ultimately taking Elijah to heaven in a chariot of fire.
Centuries later, Elijah appears again—this time at the Transfiguration beside Moses and Jesus. Pastor Tom pointed out that even though Elisha did more miracles, Elijah was the one who first stood before a king and said, “Stop. You’re on the wrong path.” He was chosen to stand next to Jesus because he stayed in the story.
Pastor Tom closed by reminding us: You may feel like just one word in a sentence, in a chapter, in a book—but God is writing a masterpiece. Stay in your story of faith. One day, you’ll stand beside Jesus shining like the sun.
James 5:17 (NLT)
“Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years!”
1 Kings 17:1 (NLT)
“Now Elijah, who was from Tishbe in Gilead, told King Ahab, ‘As surely as the Lord, the God of Israel, lives—the God I serve—there will be no dew or rain during the next few years until I give the word!'”
Luke 9:28–30 (NLT) – The Transfiguration
“About eight days later Jesus took Peter, John, and James up on a mountain to pray. And as he was praying, the appearance of his face was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white. Suddenly, two men—Moses and Elijah—appeared and began talking with Jesus.”
