Whatcha Doin That For? | Pastor Tom Golden | Morgan Luckey

In this heartwarming sermon led by Pastor Tom, along with an inspiring guest segment by Morgan Luckey called “Five Minutes of Fire,” the message radiates with the warmth of God’s love and compassion. Morgan kicks things off by diving into 1 John 3:16-18, reminding us that love isn’t just about words but about rolling up our sleeves and living it out every day. She challenges us to see people through God’s eyes and to replace judgment with grace-filled actions.

Then Pastor Tom takes the stage, painting a vivid picture with the story from Luke 7:36-50. We’re transported to the home of Simon the Pharisee, where Jesus turns expectations upside down by showing forgiveness and acceptance to a woman society had cast aside. Pastor Tom’s engaging storytelling brings out the contrast between Simon’s judgmental attitude and the woman’s heartfelt gratitude.

With humor and insight, Pastor Tom shares the parable of the forgiven debts, inviting us all to reflect on our own need for grace and forgiveness. It’s a reminder that no matter how much we think we have it all together, we all fall short and stand in need of God’s mercy.

As the sermon wraps up, Pastor Tom extends a warm invitation to each listener to approach Jesus with open hearts, knowing that he sees us for who we truly are and loves us unconditionally. It’s a message of hope and encouragement, reminding us that no matter where we’ve been or what we’ve done, we are welcomed into the embrace of God’s love.

1 John 3:16-18
16
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

John 8:1-6
1 but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.
2 At dawn he appeared again in the temple courts, where all the people gathered around him, and he sat down to teach them. 3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

Matthew 28:19-20
19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

John 13:34-35
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Luke 7:36-50
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them.
39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.”
40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.”
“Tell me, teacher,” he said.
41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii,[a] and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”
43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.”
“You have judged correctly,” Jesus said.
44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.”
48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”
49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?”
50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
