River Life celebrated Father’s Day with messages from three of our leaders—Tom Golden, Nick Scarpati, and Glenn Kight—each offering a heartfelt and challenging word to honor dads and point us to our heavenly Father.
Pastor Tom opened the morning by reminding dads that no matter what season of life they’re in, today is a good day. He shared a powerful memory of his father helping him overcome fear in little league baseball—not just by teaching him to hit, but by showing him how to stay in the box and face the conflict. Though his father didn’t have a strong faith when Tom was younger, two years ago he called and asked Tom to introduce him to Jesus. Today, Pastor Tom proudly honors his dad, who has since become a helpful presence in his life here in Florida.
Nick Scarpati followed by walking us through what Scripture says about the heart of a father. From the compassion shown in Psalm 103:13 to the powerful image of the prodigal son’s return in Luke 15, Nick reminded us that fatherhood reflects the action-oriented love of God. He urged dads to avoid the kind of harshness that crushes a child’s spirit (Ephesians 6:4) and pointed to Abraham’s faith in Genesis 22. For those who grew up without a father, Nick encouraged them to hold onto Isaiah 64:8—God is your Father and He will never leave you. He closed with Proverbs 3:5-6, reminding us to trust God with all our hearts.
Glenn Kight stepped up with a reminder that while fatherhood is a privilege, it also carries great responsibility. Too often, we worry about money—yet while 1 in 20 verses in the Bible speaks on finances, 19 out of 20 speak to deeper things. He highlighted Matthew 16:26: “What good is it to gain the whole world and lose your soul?” Glenn emphasized that the most important thing he taught his sons wasn’t how to work or how to be strong men—it was how to follow Jesus.
Pastor Tom closed by revisiting Luke 15—the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the prodigal son. In each case, there is rejoicing when the lost is found. He shared the story of Billy Moore, a man sentenced to death in 1974 for murder, who found Christ in prison. Despite facing execution 15 times, the victim’s family, along with others like Mother Teresa, fought for his life. Eventually, he was released, reunited with his family, and lived the rest of his life dedicated to Jesus. It was a reminder that even when things seem too far gone, our Father still welcomes us home.
From Nick Scarpati’s Message:
Psalm 103:13 – “As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him.”
Luke 15 – The parable of the Prodigal Son.
Ephesians 6:4 – “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.”
Genesis 22 – The story of Abraham being asked to sacrifice Isaac.
Isaiah 64:8 – “Yet you, Lord, are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
Proverbs 3:5–6 – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
From Glenn Kight’s Message:
7. Matthew 16:26 – “What good will it be for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul? Or what can anyone give in exchange for their soul?”
8. Luke 10:41–42 – “Martha, Martha,” the Lord answered, “you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
